Beis Aharon is a collection of teachings by three generations of Karliner rebbes: Aharon haGadol (“the Great” – 1736-1772), a contemporary of the Besht and a disciple of the Maggid of Mezeritch, and the founding rebbe of the dynasty; his son, Asher of Stolin (1760-1826); and Aharon of Karlin (1802-1872), his son and the author of Beis Aharon. The Karlin community was the first set up in Lithuania, a bastion of non-Hasidic Judaism. It even seems that at one point Karlin was a center of equal importance to the Maggid’s in Mezeritch: before the members of the new movement were officially called “Hasidim,” they were called “Karliners” and “Mezeritchers.”
